GUEST INTERVIEW WITH MARIA DE SOUSA!
Be prepared to dance to Maria’s delightful DJing at the May 2017 Tango Hop! We are excited to have her and we hope you are, too!
WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
Buenos Aires, Argentina
HOW DID YOU ENCOUNTER TANGO?
First memories of tango are from my childhood. Tango was everywhere, at home, on the streets, friends’ homes, stores, etc, etc. My father had the tango radio station on all night and my room was beside his bedroom!!!
ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NEW TO TANGO?
Don’t be intimidated, embrace and enjoy the music your body will listen and express.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE TANGO IN 3 WORDS?
External manifestation of the soul.
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT EXCHANGING ROLES?
You can enjoy both leading and following and get to understand your partner.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT DJING AT SANGHA SPACE?
I love how dancers are so enthusiastic about tango and so friendly. I really like that at Sangha Space [dancers] are very open, welcoming and trusty of other DJs to share their music selection.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TANGO SONG/ORQUESTRA RIGHT NOW?
Troilo, then and now.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE LAST TANDA OF THE EVENING?
It depends on the mood of the people when I DJ, but I personally like Tanturi.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SONG FOR BIRTHDAY DANCES?
The ones people like when I DJ, vals are always good, I like “Pasional” Alfredo de Angelis singer Oscar Larroca.
WHAT’S THE MAGIC TO YOUR PLAYLIST?
I guess it is a combination of soft and upbeat songs, music creates the mood of the night and my mission is to create a good feeling for all dancers. Also, the magic of cortinas is very important and a surprise for all!
WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES (BESIDES TANGO) DO YOU ENJOY?
Spending time with friends and traveling.
IF YOU WERE TO WIN THE LOTTERY, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR TIME?
Giving, traveling and dancing.
WHAT’S SOMETHING SECRETLY AWESOME ABOUT YOU THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW?
Wow this is a hard one, first thing that comes to my mind is my sensibility, how much I love and appreciate little things that are huge to me like a smile, a gesture, an embrace, a flower, a rising sun, a child’s eyes, and I can keep going…
