INTERVIEW with LIZ AND YANNICK VANHOVE (we love them)

Back for the 4th time…July 2017

LIZ AND YANNICK VANHOVE!

We really, really, really love these guys.

To the moon and back.

Like a thousand red swedish fish.

Like a million red M&Ms.

Like a love song.

Like a monkey loves bananas.

You will love their sense of wonder, their quickness to laugh, and their goofiness.

We love them.

…Have we said that already?

WHERE WERE YOU BORN?

We were both born in Ghent, the most beautiful city of Belgium. It’s a medieval city that has a real castle in the middle of it.

HOW DID YOU ENCOUNTER TANGO?

Liz’s dad listened to tango when she was a teenager and at one point she got curious about it. So she asked Yannick, who was one of the few boys in her class in high school, to try one series of classes.

ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NEW TO TANGO?

Enjoy your current knowledge at the milonga. It doesn’t matter how many steps you have learned, as long as you really enjoy the dance. We went to our first milonga after taking only 2 classes. We danced the entire evening with 2 steps and it was wonderful.

And never stop learning, the learning curve for tango is infinite!

When you are in a class, don’t blame your dancing partner for mistakes. Try to make the dance better by focusing on your body and helping your dancing partner. That is what will make you a great dancer.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE TANGO IN 3 WORDS?

Social, together, enjoy

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT EXCHANGING ROLES?

It forces everyone to become aware of the difficulty of both roles, which is something you can not teach verbally. You have to experience what it feels like to be “on the other side”. More awareness leads to better dancing, better dancing means more fun!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT TEACHING AT SANGHA SPACE?

The enormous sense of community that Sangha Space has, people are kind to each other. It’s also a super special place for us, because Sangha was our very first stop on the very first US tour we ever did. You can’t beat that “everything is new” experience. Howard and Elly took us to our first Halloween haunted house!

SOME SAY TEACHERS ARE LIFELONG LEARNERS. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE CURRENTLY LEARNING MORE ABOUT OR WORKING ON AS A TANGO TEACHER?

We absolutely agree that as long as you are teaching, you should also be learning. We also agree that you should be a lifelong learner, period. Right now, as dancers we’re trying to learn more about elements of style that the most famous dancers from the 40’s and 50’s had. We’ve been trained in more traditional techniques of tango by our maestros, Fabian Peralta & Josefina Bermudez -who in turn are also still learning from others.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TANGO SONG/ORQUESTRA?

Liz: Pugliese – Still don’t have a favorite song, it depends in which mood I am (;

Yannick: Di Sarli – Can’t choose!

WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES (BESIDES TANGO) DO YOU ENJOY?

We both love reading, gaming, hiking (nature, yaaay!), being outside, and of course our dog, ROXY!

WHAT’S SOMETHING SECRETLY AWESOME ABOUT YOU THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW?

We don’t usually tell people our secret awesomeness, but here it goes: Liz is actually a lvl 100 Dwarf Warrior named Drombol and Yannick is a lvl 100 Worgen Warlock named Howlson (;
