MALLORY SPENCER

Mallory became part of the Sangha Space community during the summer of 2015 as a yoga/tango intern. She uses her yoga practice to engage in mindful exercise that provides her with mental and physical strength. Tango is teaching her about effective nonverbal communication and the value of building a strong connection with other people. You can find her at the studio Wednesday and Thursday evenings for yoga and tango practice!

WHERE WERE YOU BORN?

Born in Chester, PA. Raised in Rose Valley, PA.

HOW DID YOU ENCOUNTER TANGO?

When I inquired about the yoga internship offered at Sangha Space, I was told that tango is similar in nature and the musicality aspect of dancing was very appealing.

HOW DID YOU ENCOUNTER YOGA?

My best friend / college roommate introduced me to Yoga with Adriene videos on YouTube and I was hooked from there.

ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NEW TO TANGO?

Stick with it! Be patient with yourself, be patient with your partners. When you see the progress of yourself and others the practice is very rewarding!

ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NEW TO YOGA?

It’s not about straining yourself or creating the “perfect” pose. It’s about the experience of your practice, what it teaches you about yourself, the way you respond to challenges, your relationship to your body internally and externally, and how you grow and change. Practice makes progress, and yoga gives you the opportunity to take stock of sensations in the body and explore what it needs from you, strengthening your mind-body connection.

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT EXCHANGING ROLES?

Getting the perspective of both a leader and a follower helps one to understand the needs of their partner and learn skills that are mutually beneficial to each role.

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT UTILIZING PARTNER POSES DURING YOGA?

Most of the time, I find my best stretch when I’m trusting my partner to help me. Their added physical support, force, and strength push me to deepen the pose and maintain my own balanced axis while hopefully helping my partner do the same.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT TAKING CLASSES AT SANGHA SPACE?

Instructors and students engage in a lot of humor together. The lessons learned in movement arts transcend to other aspects of my life, such as relationships and my own behavior.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE CURRENTLY LEARNING MORE ABOUT?

The power of intention. The ability to reflect and explore how my intentions change or what I need them to be has helped me set effective goals and boundaries as I navigate my post-college life.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TANGO SONG/ORQUESTRA?

Sur o no Sur

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE POSE OR PART OF YOUR YOGA PRACTICE?

I can’t get enough of child’s pose. The pose helps me surrender control and let go of stress and worry, I find it extremely therapeutic. The restorative stretches in yoga that I can breathe into deeply work wonders for my body and mind.

WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES (BESIDES TANGO/YOGA) DO YOU ENJOY?

Reading, walking in the woods, being with my family, spending time with animals and children.

IF YOU WERE TO WIN THE LOTTERY, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR TIME?

Traveling. Studying, Teaching, and Practicing Yoga. Find a way to give back to my own communities and others in need.

WHAT’S SOMETHING SECRETLY AWESOME ABOUT YOU THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW?

I work with my awesome mom, Debbie, at the awesome West End Frame Shop in Media! Come visit!
