MEET ADAM & CIKO!

Adam and Ciko’s teaching style focuses on building a strong, comfortable foundation with the basics before learning more complex movement sequences. Humor, fun, and exploration of the limitless expressions each person brings to the dance are all part of their classes. Adam and Ciko will be at the studio on December 12th to teach 3 workshops (at 2:00pm, 3:15pm, and 4:30pm) and perform at the Tango Hop that same evening! Come connect, dance, and learn with these lively individuals!

WHERE WERE YOU BORN?

Ciko: Turkey

Adam: Cleveland, Ohio

HOW DID YOU ENCOUNTER TANGO?

C: Not sure really. I just knew I had to try it, most likely because of the tangos here in Turkey and then I started lessons totally unaware of the community and finally discovered the whole social world in New York City at Chelsea Market where they used to have a milonga every Saturday.

A: Back packing around Europe at 19. I met a guy from Houston at a youth hostel in Paris. I remember he was doing the box step, Salida, in the little room we shared between 6 travelers.

We were all watching him with curiosity. He took us to the Seine River where we saw a lot of people dancing on a beautiful evening. I thought it was the most amazing thing I’d ever seen.

ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NEW TO TANGO?

C: Yes, let go and be yourself in the dance as soon as possible so you can express more sooner and dance!..not just lead or follow.

A: Dance.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE TANGO IN 3 WORDS?

C: Burst of emotions in an embrace

A: Life, art, honesty

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT EXCHANGING ROLES?

C: That you can be freer and more active in both because when you do both roles you appreciate and understand what they stand for better. It might help you decide how you want to feel in each role based on what you like from your partners.

Aaaand you can dance with everyone!!!

A: Like anything in life it is important to understand and experience different perspectives. It creates an awareness and appreciation for what we are not experiencing in our own process.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT TEACHING AT SANGHA SPACE?

C: I admire Lori and what she created. And I love the people that are part of the community there. They are relaxed and they are eager to learn and have fun at the same time. Plus I looove that space ๐Ÿ™‚

A: The community.

SOME SAY TEACHERS ARE LIFELONG LEARNERS. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE CURRENTLY LEARNING MORE ABOUT OR WORKING ON AS A TANGO TEACHER?

C: We are constantly learning. We learn about teaching through each experience and person we encounter aaand we learn better what we are doing, if that makes any sense. Doing something is one thing, but being able to relay the ideas to others you get to hear yourself express it and it clarifies things. Plus we always work on our dance and our dynamics. We learn from taking classes with other professionals and from hearing their point of view or their style. We even learn from speaking to friends.

We are adamant about going back to Argentina each and every year and spending a month on learning again and more.

A: The cross.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TANGO SONG/ORQUESTRA?

C: No, no I am not going to answer this cause there’s no one answer for me.

Changes each day and it’s always more than just one. ๐Ÿ˜‰

A: D’Arienzo

WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES (BESIDES TANGO) DO YOU ENJOY?

C: If we are talking about physical things then I can say I very much enjoy swimming, yoga, Feldenkrais, contact improv, east coast swing, biking and just walking ๐Ÿ™‚

A: Watching sports. Reading history. Exercise.

IF YOU WERE TO WIN THE LOTTERY, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR TIME?

C: Just as I do now… Dance and dance more! but probably I would work even harder because I would take more classes and have my own school to create a studio that I have designed and decorated that can feel more like home for students.

A: On a yacht in the middle of no where.

WHAT’S SOMETHING SECRETLY AWESOME ABOUT YOU THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW?

C: I can bite (Not sure if it’s awesome though. Hahhahhah. Just watch out!)ย  ๐Ÿ˜‰

A: I love my family and friends more than anything else.
