Karen became an intern at Sangha Space in October 2015. She has a passion for the movement arts, expressed through tango and yoga, driven by the desire to explore and improve. You can find Karen at the studio Wednesday and Thursday evenings in yoga and tango classes!
WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
Lebanon, PA, aka Amish country.
HOW DID YOU ENCOUNTER TANGO?
I’m not sure. Probably movies and watching videos online. I always had an impression of it as a beautifully emotional dance.
HOW DID YOU ENCOUNTER YOGA?
My college roommate was really into yoga. I was intrigued by her description, but the classes at my college seemed scary and advanced. One day she took me out to a nice sunny field and taught me the basics. I was immediately hooked!
ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NEW TO YOGA/TANGO?
Be honest, and don’t be ashamed of being new. Everyone was new once, and everyone at Sangha Space is so helpful and encouraging. If you don’t let people know when you struggle or have questions, you are losing out on a wealth of awesome learning experiences. Plus, my experience has been that the super talented and kind people here are really excited to work with you on things, so asking questions opens you up to community connections as well as to new tips and tricks!
CAN YOU DESCRIBE TANGO IN 3 WORDS?
Can I? Yes!
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOGA IN 3 WORDS?
Depth, breath, stillness.
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT EXCHANGING ROLES?
I think that this world would be a much better place if we all took more time to see the world from other people’s perspectives. Exchanging roles is one very helpful way of doing that. It puts you in someone else’s shoes and hopefully gives you some empathy for what they are experiencing.
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT UTILIZING PARTNER POSES IN A CLASS?
I love partner poses! For me, it is a chance to connect with another person, as well as to see what my body is doing by looking at theirs. So often in yoga you can feel very inside your own head, so taking a moment to laugh and talk to someone else and communicate with your body is freeing and wonderful.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT TAKING CLASSES AT SANGHA SPACE?
The community, definitely. I feel so incredibly lucky that I get to spend time with all the wonderful people here. It’s hard to find a space filled with like-minded, kind, friendly people, but somehow Sangha Space has managed to. I’m so glad I get to be a part of that and I hope I can do that for other people.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE CURRENTLY LEARNING MORE ABOUT?
Everything I can about tango. If you have a really cool step or advice about my frame or anything else, I always want to hear it, and I always want to dance. In yoga, I’m trying to take time to learn about my own limits and how to listen to my own body, instead of feeling like I always need to push for something more.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TANGO SONG/ORQUESTRA?
Montserrat, Bajofondo Tango Club
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE YOGA POSE?
Wide legged forward fold. I could stay there for ages and I get really happy whenever a yoga teacher includes it in our practice.
WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES (BESIDES YOGA/TANGO) DO YOU ENJOY?
I read quite a bit and knit obsessively. I like to sew things and spend time with my greyhound. I also enjoy most things on the geek spectrum, like video games.
WHAT’S SOMETHING SECRETLY AWESOME ABOUT YOU THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW?
I said this in a class recently so maybe some people do already know, but I can read tarot cards in Italian. Bonus fact, I used to sew costumes for the PA Renaissance Faire!
