Kristin Balmer will be teaching the March Intermediate Series (Wednesdays at 7:30pm) with Elly, entitled “Tango’s Illusion: Revealing the Secrets of the Magician & the Assistant” — you won’t want to miss the magic! As usual, expect to exchange roles throughout each class to fully understand the responsibilities of the Magician & the Assistant and how this collaboration creates the magic that is tango.
WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
I was born in Harrisburg Pa.
HOW DID YOU ENCOUNTER TANGO?
I lived next door to Kelly and Leslie. I was an introvert who came home from work and read for 6-8 hours at a time or made drawings. I got tired of hearing all the laughter and music next door while I was sitting at home alone….so I started taking lessons.
ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NEW TO TANGO?
I would advise to not give up…become comfortable being bad at something. Too many people get embarrassed that they aren’t fluent at tango right away, it takes time! Especially if you aren’t a kinetic learner. I was really slow learning, it took me about 6 years to get to where most followers are at after 1 year. But I learned how to learn….that’s what you really want, to learn how to learn, because then it gets easier.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE TANGO IN 3 WORDS?
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT EXCHANGING ROLES?
Getting to play with the music from both sides, and than knowing the musicality options of your partner.
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT DANCING TANGO AT SANGHA SPACE?
Sangha is a beautiful welcoming space and the staff are cozy and fun!
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE CURRENTLY LEARNING MORE ABOUT OR WORKING ON AS A TANGO TEACHER?
I want to better lay out the dots for the students to connect for themselves. I am in awe of teachers like Robin Thomas and Marcello Gutierrez and Luciana Valle who put together a class with a clear progression of skills to acquire and then the dance concepts become understandable only through the body executing those skills and the brain saying aHA! I want to be that kind of teacher because I have the most fun in those classes.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TANGO SONG OR ORCHESTRA?
No te quiero mas by Enrique Rodriguez or most things by Rodriguez really….they are bittersweet and heartbreaking and I love the missing chan at the end.
WHAT OTHER ACTIVITES DO YOU ENJOY?
I paint and draw and make books and hang out with Jeff’s kids.
IF YOU WERE TO WIN THE LOTTERY, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR TIME?
Making art, dancing lessons, travel to see art and to dance tango. And I would start an art school for kids
