WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
Loveland, OH

HOW DID YOU ENCOUNTER EXPRESSIVE WRITING AND PERFORMANCE?
Early on, I knew there were a lot of different parts of myself that were in conflict. I do comedy, so I was expressing this through different characters. I would tap into these different, what you would call “sub archetypes” within me and I’d just exaggerate and distort them. Creating these alter-egos of myself that are in conflict, I started letting them move and express in the way they wanted to express. So I’m always playing with the different parts of myself. From early on, as early as Second Grade, I was dressing up as different characters, but it was really just different parts of myself that wanted to act out in a different way.

ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NEW TO IMPROVISATIONAL WRITING AND MOVEMENT?
The body can help everything. Be willing to move in a way that might surprise you, and see what unlocks. People are going to learn a lot about writing and the body and being able to speak their story. People are afraid to claim their voice and I think you have to claim it with your body. That inner critic that we all have, I think that’s fear. I just turn that into another character and then it lessens it’s grip, I give it it’s own voice because it’s not going away. I’d encourage anybody who’s feeling that fear, to acknowledge it and let that voice speak.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE THIS KIND OF SELF-EXPRESSION IN 3 WORDS?
Body, Voice, Story

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT WRITING?
That I’m able to integrate and accept different aspects of self.

SOME SAY TEACHERS ARE LIFELONG LEARNERS. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE CURRENTLY LEARNING MORE ABOUT OR WORKING ON AS A TEACHER?
The same as above, learning to accept and integrate all of these different parts.

WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES (BESIDES WRITING/IMPROV MOVEMENT) DO YOU ENJOY?
I love, LOVE to hike. I spend a lot of time in Kauai hiking. I try to take long back-packing trips and spend a lot of time in nature. I’m a major music fan so playing music, listening to music.

IF YOU WERE TO WIN THE LOTTERY, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR TIME?
I’d create my own show, which I’m already doing now, but on a larger scale. I’d open a retreat center with a theater attached to it and have a place for artists to come, and a place for me to live. Definitely study more.

WHAT’S SOMETHING SECRETLY AWESOME ABOUT YOU THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW?
Let’s see…That’s a fun question. With humor, I can make anyone feel comfortable and welcome.
