RITA & HOWARD
Rita Berenshteyn and Howard Schwarz are locals of the Philadelphia area. These experienced tango instructors share their wealth of knowledge with Sangha Space students every 2nd Thursday at Tango Clinic. Rita brings her fiery fashion sense, Howard brings sound effects.
WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
R: Tashkent, Uzbekistan
H: River Forest, Illinois
HOW DID YOU ENCOUNTER TANGO?
R: Same for both of us: Ballroom Dancing, Tango became only dance we’re interested in now.
H: Ballroom Dancing
ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NEW TO TANGO?
R: Be patient, and maybe be a little crazy.
H: Argentine Tango is not easy.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE TANGO IN 3 WORDS?
R: Improvisation, Romance, and…
H: Fun, Romantic, Challenging
R: Improvisation, Creation, Intimacy (instead of Romance because he said that)…..Creation (same thing as improvisation), Musicality, Intimacy
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT EXCHANGING ROLES?
R: Opportunity to understand what other person feels and take care of that person, and be patient with that person (Leading). As follower, you understand to be patient with leader and the difficulties the leader has, give leader opportunity to explore.
H: Understand the other role better.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT TEACHING AT SANGHA SPACE?
R: See if people adopting your moves of dancing, that is very fun.
H: Drinking…no no, I’m just kidding. Seeing people learn and grow or improve.
SOME SAY TEACHERS ARE LIFELONG LEARNERS. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE CURRENTLY LEARNING MORE ABOUT OR WORKING ON AS A TANGO TEACHER?
R: Learn how to make Howard stop speaking and I can talk!
H: Speak louder! (he says loudly)
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TANGO SONG/ORQUESTRA?
R: What was that song we danced? “Dance Me to the End of Time” – the Civil Wars, that’s romantic.
H: “Poema”… no, no, no! [Howard hates “Poema”.] No favorite.
WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES (BESIDES TANGO) DO YOU ENJOY?
H: Motorcycle riding
IF YOU WERE TO WIN THE LOTTERY, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR TIME?
R: Tangoing 24/7
H: Somewhere else! I’d be doing the same thing. You’d be retiring.
R: I’d be taking more classes.
H: I already won the lottery – I got you!
